Communication Effectiveness
Assessments
It is imperative for businesses, particularly nuclear
utilities, to have effective horizontal and vertical
communications for decision making and continuous quality
improvement purposes. In many businesses, managers and
supervisors spend most of their time on people problems or
human performance issues, and having effective communication
skills and processes are clearly keys to on-the-job success.
Above all, you need an open communication and problem
solving organizational culture, one where individuals are
involved in the decision-making process, have a questioning
attitude, and are encouraged to report problems,
particularly on safety, to their superiors without fear of
retaliation.
MDI helps its clients determine the effectiveness of their
communications (horizontal/vertical) internally with
employees, and externally with customers or representatives
of regulatory agencies. This is done through a systematic
assessment process of data collection, analysis, and
validation. Information is collected by: 1) review of
documents, 2) attitude and opinion surveys, 3) employee
interviews, and 4) observation of actual work, including
meetings and personal interactions. The focus areas for such
assessments vary from client to client, but usually include:
leadership, teamwork, training, planning, cross-functional
relationships, and regulatory relations. We help by
benchmarking your communications program to the best in the
industry, objectively evaluate and determine the strengths
and weaknesses (opportunities for improvement) of your
communication programs and processes, and make specific
improvement recommendations and define the changes necessary
to improve effectiveness.
